15 Best Things to Do in Senggigi, Lombok (2026 Complete Guide) – A Walk in the World

I love Lombok. Every time I go, I make the same quiet promise to myself — that one day, when life allows it, I’ll buy a piece of land near one of these beaches and stay forever. It’s the natural beauty, yes, but more than that it’s the quietness. The absence of the mass tourism that has transformed so much of Bali. Lombok still feels like a place that belongs to itself.

Senggigi is Lombok’s most established resort town, sitting on the island’s west coast with the Lombok Strait spread out in front of it and Bali’s Mount Agung visible on the horizon on clear days. It gets a mixed reputation among travellers. Some find it underwhelming, others find it exactly what they need. I think both responses are valid, and the key is knowing what Senggigi is actually good for before you arrive.

This is the complete guide to things to do in Senggigi, Lombok — what to see, where to eat, where to stay, how to get there, and how to use Senggigi as a base for the rest of the island.

Updated April 2026.

Is Senggigi Worth Visiting?

I’ll be honest with you. Senggigi is not Lombok’s most spectacular destination. If you had to choose between Senggigi and Kuta Lombok, Gili Air, or Sekotong, I’d send you to those first. The beaches are wilder, the scenery more raw.

But Senggigi earns its place on every Lombok itinerary. It is the island’s logistics capital — the most convenient base for anyone who wants to explore widely without constant long transfers. It also carries a quiet resilience worth acknowledging: the 2018 earthquake hit this area hard. Senggigi has rebuilt, steadily and without fuss, and visiting now directly supports that recovery.

Senggigi is the right choice if you want:

  • Comfortable, high-quality accommodation with genuine luxury options
  • Easy access to the Gili Islands (one hour) and Mount Rinjani (two hours)
  • Stunning sunsets with Mount Agung glowing across the Lombok Strait
  • A calm, well-organised resort experience for couples or families

Consider going elsewhere if you want:

  • Lombok’s wildest, most dramatic beaches: head to Kuta Lombok
  • Non-stop nightlife: Gili Trawangan is your place
  • Complete seclusion: Sekotong or Ekas will satisfy

Come with honest expectations and Senggigi will reward you.

Senggigi vs Kuta Lombok — Which Should You Choose?

This is one of the most searched questions about Lombok and it deserves a straight answer.

Senggigi Kuta Lombok
Beach quality Decent, calm, family-friendly Spectacular, dramatic, world-class
Accommodation Best range on the island, real luxury options Growing scene, more budget-focused
Gili Island access Easy, about 1 hour Much further, 2.5 hours or more
Rinjani access Good base, about 2 hours Poor base, 4 hours or more
Food and restaurants Wide range, established scene Growing but still limited
Surf Moderate World-class
Vibe Resort town, relaxed Surf town, adventurous
Best for Couples, families, base travellers Surfers, backpackers, adventurers

If you have five or more days in Lombok, visit both. If you only have three days and love surf and wild beaches, go to Kuta Lombok. If you want comfort, sunsets, and easy island hopping, Senggigi is the smarter choice.

15 Best Things to Do in Senggigi, Lombok

Villa Hantu — The Ghost Villa Viewpoint

Top View of Senggigi Beach
You can spend an entire day watching this in Villa Hantu

Villa Hantu is one of those Senggigi experiences that defies easy description. It is an abandoned building. A foreigner began constructing it on a clifftop, encountered some dispute with local authorities, and left it unfinished. What remains is a concrete shell perched on a dramatic ridge above the ocean, with unobstructed views of Senggigi Beach and the Lombok Strait stretching towards Bali.

Villa Hantu
Villa Hantu is an abandoned house

The view from inside — through the empty window frames, out across the beach below — is genuinely extraordinary. There is something eerie and something beautiful about it simultaneously. The light in the late afternoon, with the ocean catching it, is particularly good. This is one of the best sunset viewpoints in all of Senggigi and almost no tour group ever comes here.

To get there, head north on the coastal road by scooter. You’ll find it on the hill above Malimbu Beach. Ask a local if you can’t spot it. Most people in the area know exactly where it is.

“The light coming through those empty window frames at sunset, the ocean catching it below, was one of those moments I didn’t photograph properly because I was too busy experiencing it.”

💡 Pro tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to explore the different levels and find your favourite frame. Bring a torch if you plan to stay until after dark.

⚠️ Warning: The structure is abandoned and not officially maintained. Explore carefully and stay well away from any unstable sections.

Watch the Sunset Over Mount Agung

This is Senggigi’s single greatest natural spectacle, and one that no other resort town in Lombok can offer. On clear days, across the Lombok Strait, you can see Mount Agung in Bali catching the last light of the day. As the sun drops, the volcano turns gold, then orange, then deep crimson, and all the while the ocean in front of you reflects the same colours.

The best sunset spots in Senggigi are Malimbu Hill for the best unobstructed view, Villa Hantu for atmosphere with almost no crowds, the Pura Batu Bolong temple terrace for a dramatic ocean backdrop, and Bale Solah Beach Club if you want a cold drink in hand while you watch. Any of the beachfront restaurants along the main strip will also do the job.

Go with a cold drink and give yourself a full hour. It’s worth every minute.

Ride the Coastal Road North

A road drive with a bike in Senggigi is rewarding with mind blowing views.

Rent a scooter and follow the ocean north. The coastal road from Senggigi through Malimbu, past Nipah Beach, and up towards Bangsal harbour is one of the most beautiful drives in Indonesia. You follow the water continuously, the road rising and falling with the clifftops, offering new angles on the Lombok Strait at every bend.

What makes this ride special is the spontaneity it allows. When you see a track dropping towards the water, take it. More often than not, you’ll find an empty beach at the end — white sand, no warung, not another tourist in sight.

⚠️ Always carry travel insurance when riding a scooter in Indonesia. Read about my own bike accident in the Philippines to understand why this matters. I use WorldNomads and trust them completely.

Senggigi Beach — Swim, Relax and Watch the World Go By

Untouched Senggigi Beach
An unspoiled, empty beach in Senggigi with a blue ocean.

Senggigi Beach is the long, curving stretch of sand that runs through the heart of town. The waters are calm, protected by an offshore reef, making it one of the safer swimming beaches on Lombok’s west coast and genuinely ideal for families with young children. The sand isn’t the whitest you’ll find on the island, but the setting is comfortable and the infrastructure is the most developed in Lombok.

Roads in Indonesia going to oceans.
This kind of road will take you to the open ocean.

If you want better beaches, head north. Nipah Beach is about 15 minutes by scooter and is everything the town beach isn’t: quiet, shaded by coconut palms, with calm reef-protected water and almost no crowds on weekdays. Mangsit Beach is 25 minutes further, more private, backed by upscale boutique hotels, and excellent for swimming.

💡 Pro tip: The main Senggigi Beach is at its best in the early morning before the heat builds. Come back in the evening for the sunset.

Pura Batu Bolong Temple — Senggigi’s Most Dramatic Cultural Site

Pura Batu Bolong is Senggigi’s most significant cultural site: a Hindu temple perched on a rocky headland that juts into the Lombok Strait, with ocean visible on three sides. The temple sits on a natural rock with a hole through it (batu bolong means “rock with a hole”), and on clear days the view frames Mount Agung of Bali in the distance with almost cinematic precision.

This is an active place of worship, not a tourist attraction. Enter respectfully wearing a sarong, which is provided at the entrance. Go in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewest visitors. The sunset from the temple terrace is one of the most beautiful in Senggigi. Entry is free. Borrowing a sarong costs IDR 10,000. The temple is about 2 km south of central Senggigi on the coastal road.

Day Trip to Narmada Park

Taman Narmada is a royal water garden built in 1727 by the King of Karangasem as a symbolic replica of Mount Rinjani and its sacred crater lake. The terraced gardens, reflecting pools, Hindu shrines, and historical architecture make it one of the most culturally significant sites on Lombok, and one that most travellers visiting Senggigi completely miss.

Located about 20 km east of Senggigi, it’s an easy half-day trip. Go in the morning when the gardens are cool and the light is at its best.

📌 Book: Senggigi Narmada Park Full-Day Private Tour (Klook)

Malimbu Hill — Best Panoramic Viewpoint in Senggigi

View from Bukit Malimbu
Breathtaking view from Malimbu hill.

Not far from Villa Hantu, Malimbu Hill is one of the finest viewpoints on Lombok’s entire west coast. The road climbs steeply and at the top you get an unobstructed panorama: rolling green hills in one direction, the deep blue of the Lombok Strait in the other, and on clear days the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Agung rising above the horizon in Bali.

A few warungs at the top serve cold drinks. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good position. This is consistently rated by visitors as one of the finest sunset spots in all of Lombok.

💡 Pro tip: On very clear mornings, the view of Bali across the strait is sharp and extraordinary. It’s also worth a sunrise visit if you’re an early riser.

Enjoy the Greeneries

Greeneries and Landscapes in Senggigi
Senggigi will present you with some instagrammable postcard perfect greeneries.

Senggigi is not all about the ocean and beaches. Unlike some other places in Lombok, it has smaller hills. As a result, you will find a lot of green which is pleasing to the eyes. Coconut and palms trees are cherries on top. You can find such a peaceful environment in many places while you will be riding your bike. Take some rest on those pure grasses before relaxing on yet another beach.

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls

This is the single best day trip from Senggigi, and the one most guides fail to cover properly.

Located in the green interior of central Lombok, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Senggigi, Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu are two of the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia. Benang Stokel cascades through a series of tiers into a pool you can swim in, surrounded by jungle. Benang Kelambu, whose name means “mosquito net waterfall,” spreads water across the rock face in a curtain of fine mist. Standing underneath it is one of those experiences that makes you forget entirely where you are.

The drive through central Lombok, through rice paddies, volcanic scenery, and traditional Sasak villages, is part of the experience. This is not a trip to rush. Give it a full day.

📌 Book: Senggigi Benang Stokel and Kelambu Waterfalls Full-Day Private Tour (Klook)

Day Trip to the Gili Islands

This is arguably the most important thing Senggigi offers: it is the most convenient departure point for the famous Gili Islands. Gili Air, the most relaxed and beautiful of the three, is about one hour from the coast. Gili Trawangan, the party island, and Gili Meno, the quiet honeymoon island, are similar distances.

💡 The Teluk Nare Secret: Most guides send you to Bangsal harbour, which is chaotic, crowded, and full of aggressive touts. Instead, book a private speedboat from Teluk Nare, about 15 minutes north of Senggigi on the coastal road. The crossing takes only 10 to 15 minutes to Gili Trawangan, skips the Bangsal queue entirely, and costs around USD $15 to $20 per person. This is the local knowledge most travel guides never share.

📌 Book: Lombok to Gili Islands transport (12GoAsia)

Mount Rinjani — Lombok’s Greatest Adventure

Senggigi is one of the best bases for organising a Mount Rinjani trek. At 3,726 metres, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano offers a multi-day summit trek through rainforest, savannah, and volcanic terrain, with the famous Segara Anak crater lake as the centrepiece.

The two-day, one-night crater rim option is the most popular: you reach the rim at sunrise, descend to the crater lake, and return the following day. The full summit to caldera option takes three to four days and is physically demanding. Both are extraordinary experiences.

This is not a casual hike. Book with a reputable operator that provides guides, porters, equipment, and meals. The mountain is closed from January to March due to rain and dangerous trail conditions.

📌 Book: Mount Rinjani Trek from Senggigi (Klook)

Secret South Gili Islands — Gili Nanggu, Tangkong and Kedis

While everyone rushes to Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air, there is a cluster of smaller, much quieter islands off the southwest coast of Lombok that are far less visited and equally beautiful. Gili Nanggu, Gili Tangkong, and Gili Kedis offer superb snorkelling, white sand, crystal water, and almost zero crowds. This is one of the most underrated day trips from Senggigi and a genuine alternative for anyone who finds the main Gilis too busy.

Pusuk Monkey Forest Pass

On the road between Senggigi and Bangsal harbour, the route climbs through the Pusuk mountain pass — a forested ridge where long-tailed macaques live along the roadside. They’ve become comfortable enough with vehicles to approach and look for food. Slow down, open the window, and watch. Do not feed them. It’s bad for the animals and it encourages larger groups to mob passing vehicles.

This isn’t a formal attraction. It’s a natural encounter that happens on your way to the Gili boat departure point and well worth planning your timing around.

Lombok Cooking Class — Learn Sasak Cuisine

The Sasak people of Lombok have a distinctive culinary tradition: bold spices, pelecing kangkung (water spinach with chilli sambal), ayam taliwang (spiced grilled chicken), and fresh coconut milk in almost everything. A hands-on cooking class is one of the most genuinely memorable ways to spend a morning in Senggigi.

Most classes begin at a local market to buy fresh ingredients, then guide you through preparing five or six traditional dishes, and end with eating everything you made. The Anggrek Putih cooking class in Senggigi includes a garden tour and hotel pick-up and is consistently well-reviewed.

Visit a Traditional Sasak Village

Lombok’s Sasak people have a distinct culture: traditional wooden houses with woven bamboo walls and alang-alang thatched roofs, community weaving traditions, and local crafts. A guided visit to a Sasak village near Senggigi gives you cultural context for what makes Lombok fundamentally different from Bali, and directly supports local communities. Most Senggigi tour operators can arrange this as a half-day trip.

Art Market and Greenery Walks

The Senggigi Art Market carries Lombok textiles, wood carvings, silver jewellery, rattan bags, local pottery, and the distinctive hand-woven fabrics of the Sasak people. Bargaining is expected. Quality varies, so look carefully, but genuine handmade pieces are available at fair prices.

Beyond the market, Senggigi’s interior deserves time. The smaller hills, the coconut palms, the quiet green between the ocean views — it’s a side of the town most visitors rush past. Ride your scooter into the backstreets, take a rest on the grass, listen to the wind in the palms. The unhurried side of Senggigi is often its most rewarding.

Senggigi Itinerary — 1, 2, or 3 Days

2 Days Senggigi and waterfalls Day 1: Coastal ride, beaches, sunset. Day 2: Benang Stokel and Kelambu full-day tour
3 Days Senggigi and Gili Islands Day 1: Senggigi. Day 2: Gili Air or Gili Trawangan. Day 3: Narmada Park and farewell sunset

How to Get to Senggigi

From Lombok Airport

Senggigi is about 25 km from Lombok International Airport, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by car in normal traffic. Bluebird taxis are metered and reliable from the airport. Grab also works well. Expect to pay IDR 100,000 to 150,000, which is roughly USD $6 to $10.

💡 Worth knowing: Lombok has no tourist levy in 2026. Unlike Bali, where visitors pay IDR 150,000 per person on arrival, your money goes further here.

From Bali

The fastest route is to fly from Bali to Lombok, which takes 30 minutes and is served by multiple daily flights on Lion Air, Garuda, and Batik Air, often for under USD $30 one way. Fast boats also run from Padang Bai in Bali to Bangsal harbour in Lombok, taking roughly 2 to 3 hours, though they are less reliable in rough sea conditions.

📌 Book: Bali to Lombok transport (12GoAsia)

From Kuta Lombok

About 70 km south, usually 1.5 hours by car or hired driver. There is no public transport between the two, so hire a driver or rent a scooter.

How to Get Around Senggigi

Scooter rental costs IDR 60,000 to 100,000 per day and gives you the most freedom, especially for the coastal road north. The road has some steep sections, so only rent one if you are a confident and experienced rider.

A hired car with driver costs IDR 400,000 to 600,000 per day and is ideal for families, day trips to waterfalls or Narmada Park, or anyone not comfortable on a scooter. The extra cost is well worth the peace of mind.

Central Senggigi’s beach strip is walkable for restaurants and the main beach. For anything further, you’ll need transport.

Where to eat in Senggigi?

Senggigi has a surprisingly good food scene for a town of its size: a genuine mix of beachfront seafood, fine dining with ocean views, authentic Indonesian warungs, and Italian restaurants that would hold their own in most European cities.

Fine Dining and Special Occasions

Square Restaurant and Lounge is the most-reviewed restaurant in Senggigi (4.3/5 from over 1,800 ratings) and the consistent go-to for a proper dinner out. Known for the best steaks in Lombok, European and international fare, and a unique Sasaknese Begibung family-style sharing menu that gives you a genuine taste of local culture in an upscale setting. Stylish without being pretentious, and good for date nights and group dinners alike.

The Kliff is perched on a cliff above the ocean at the Katamaran Resort area and is Senggigi’s most romantic dining experience. Stunning sunset and ocean views, Italian-Japanese fusion menu, fresh seafood and steaks. Rated 4.4/5 from 467 reviews. Go for the view as much as the food, and arrive before sunset to get the full effect.

Nooq Trattoria and Sunset Bar, located inside Qunci Villas, is the highest-rated restaurant in Senggigi (4.9/5 from over 1,000 reviews) and earns every point of it. Authentic Italian cooking with excellent pizza, handmade pasta and seafood, plus complimentary homemade focaccia and limoncello. Intimate, romantic, and consistently praised for attentive personal service. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for sunset tables.

Quali Indonesian and Asian Dining, also at Qunci Villas, offers beachfront fine dining with an Indonesian and Asian focus. Excellent satay, nasi goreng, and fresh seafood in an elegant oceanfront setting. Rated 4.6 to 4.9/5. One of the best places in Senggigi to eat genuinely good Indonesian food in a setting worthy of the occasion.

Senja Restaurant, located at the Sheraton Senggigi, is a semi-outdoor beachfront restaurant with stunning ocean views, live music on select evenings, and a menu anchored by the Lombok Culinary Journey set menu: a curated progression through local Sasak flavours. Well above average for a hotel restaurant, and worth visiting even if you’re not staying at the Sheraton.

Beachfront and Casual

Lotus Bayview is an institution on Senggigi Beach and one of the most beloved restaurants in town. Tables set directly on the sand, wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood platters, homemade pasta, and Italian gelato with the sound of waves in the background. Lively, relaxed, and consistently popular with both tourists and expats who know Senggigi well. Perfect for a long, unhurried dinner.

La Chill Bar and Restaurant is the place to settle in for the evening with a drink and watch the light change over the Lombok Strait. Beachfront, relaxed, good cocktails, and a menu covering international food and fresh seafood. Rated 4.4/5 from over 2,300 reviews, one of the most-reviewed restaurants in Senggigi. Good for groups and couples alike.

Asmara Restaurant
Entrance of Asmara restaurant, it has a pretty natural setting.

Asmara Restaurant is one of Senggigi’s most established restaurants and a personal recommendation. Romantic candlelight setting, a spacious garden atmosphere that suits families and groups, and a menu of Indonesian and international dishes including beef rendang and chicken taliwang. Not a budget option, but absolutely worth it for a proper dinner.

Bale Solah Beach Club is the best spot in Senggigi for a sunset drink that turns into dinner. Beachfront, relaxed, good cocktails, Indonesian food, and the right kind of atmosphere for a slow evening. Come for the light, stay for the food.

Local and Budget

Warung Buana serves the best Indonesian food in Senggigi at an affordable price. Not a fancy setting, but the taste will bring you back before you leave. Authentic, honest cooking: the kind that reminds you what Indonesian food actually tastes like when it’s made properly and not adapted for tourists.

Nuf’said Warung is rated 4.4/5 from 440 reviews and is the best-rated casual warung near Senggigi Beach. Fresh seafood, satay, and Indonesian classics at genuinely local prices in a laid-back atmosphere. The value-to-quality ratio here is excellent.

Warung Ijo is a modest family-run warung serving authentic Indonesian home cooking at very affordable prices. Gado-gado, nasi campur buffet-style, and good vegetarian options. The kind of place that doesn’t appear in most guides but that locals and long-term visitors quietly love.

Senggigi Travel Tips

Cash is essential. Most warungs and local shops are cash only, so bring IDR from the airport and don’t rely on finding an ATM when you need one most.

Buy a SIM card at Lombok Airport on arrival. Mobile data is essential for navigation on the coastal road and finding those hidden beaches off the main road.

A sarong is required for Pura Batu Bolong. You can borrow one at the entrance for IDR 10,000, but having your own is always cleaner.

Arrive at your sunset viewpoint 30 minutes early. The light changes fast and the best spots at Malimbu Hill and Villa Hantu fill up quickly around golden hour.

For Gili transfers, book ahead during July, August, and September. Boats fill up fast in peak season. Use Teluk Nare rather than Bangsal to skip the crowds and the touts.

Lombok has no tourist levy in 2026. Unlike Bali, where visitors pay IDR 150,000 per person on arrival, your money goes further here.

May to October is the best time to visit. Clear skies, calm seas, and the clearest views of Mount Agung across the strait.

Senggigi — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Senggigi worth visiting?

Yes, particularly as a base for exploring wider Lombok. The town beach isn’t Lombok’s best, but the sunsets, the coastal road, access to the Gili Islands, and some of the best affordable luxury hotels in Indonesia make it a smart hub for most itineraries.

How many days should you spend in Senggigi?

Two to three days is ideal. Enough time to explore the coastline, do a waterfall day trip or Gili Islands visit, and enjoy the sunsets. More than three nights can feel quiet for active travellers.

Is Senggigi better than Kuta Lombok?

They serve different purposes. Senggigi is better for luxury accommodation, Gili Island access, and a comfortable resort experience. Kuta Lombok is better for surf, wild beaches, and adventure. Ideally, visit both.

Can you swim at Senggigi Beach?

Yes. The waters are calm and protected by the offshore reef, making Senggigi Beach one of the safer swimming beaches on Lombok’s west coast. Nipah Beach, slightly north, is even better.

How do I get from Senggigi to the Gili Islands?

Travel 15 minutes north to Bangsal harbour, or better still, use Teluk Nare for a private speedboat that takes only 10 to 15 minutes. Multiple daily departures. Book ahead in July, August, and September.

What is the best time to visit Senggigi?

May to October, the dry season. Clear skies, calm seas, and the clearest views of Mount Agung across the Lombok Strait.

Is Senggigi affected by the 2018 earthquake?

The 2018 Lombok earthquake caused significant damage across the island. As of 2026, Senggigi has largely recovered — hotels rebuilt, roads repaired, and tourism returning steadily. Visiting now directly supports the community’s ongoing recovery.

What is the best day trip from Senggigi?

The Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls. Most guides miss this entirely. It’s the most rewarding full day out from Senggigi, combining jungle trekking, swimming, and spectacular waterfall scenery. Book the Klook private tour for the most comfortable experience.

Final Thoughts on Senggigi

Senggigi is not Lombok’s most dramatic destination. But it’s one of its most useful: a comfortable, well-connected base from which the rest of the island becomes accessible. The coastal road north is one of the finest drives in Indonesia. The sunsets, with Mount Agung glowing on the horizon, are extraordinary. The accommodation is genuinely excellent value, and both the Gili Islands and Lombok’s best waterfall country are within easy reach.

Use Senggigi as your hub. Stay two or three nights. Do the coastal road ride. Watch the sunset from Malimbu Hill. Take the waterfall day trip. Then move on somewhere wilder — Kuta Lombok, Sekotong, or Ekas — knowing you’ve seen the comfortable, beautiful side of the island first.

You’ll understand Lombok better for having started here.
