Golden Globes 2026: Why Ricky Gervais was missing from award show despite winning Best Stand-up Comedy Performance for Mortality

Ricky Gervais has hosted the Golden Globe awards numerous times over the years, but when it came time for him to be nominated and even win an award, he was nowhere to be seen.

The 64-year-old was at home in the UK when he won the award for Best Stand-up Comedy Performance for his routine, Mortality.

The British comedian previously shared that while everyone in Hollywood would be piled into the Beverly Hilton, he would be snuggled up at home with his loved ones.

He told BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life on January 8, “I didn’t have any joy watching my fat face on screen. I just want peace and quiet…

“I’m probably not going to the Golden Globes. It’s too far to go. It takes a lot to get me off the couch with my cat and my girlfriend [Jane Fallon] watching Netflix.

“I love the work, I love writing, I love creating, I love stand-up, but all the other stuff I could really do without.”

Gervais was the host of the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

His last turn hosting was particularly contentious, making crude jokes about Judi Dench and Jason Momoa and being very blunt.

Gervais spent his monologue grilling Hollywood elites, major corporations, and the industry as a whole.

Famously, he advised his winning peers to not use their speeches as a platform for “out of touch” political statements.

“You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg,” he told Hollywood.

He then told them to, “come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and f–k off.”

He now has five Golden Globes in total, with his other ones being awarded for his roles in The Office, Extras, and his stand-up special Ricky Gervais: Armageddon.
