G Flip interview: Aussie singer’s ‘pinch myself’ moment ahead of headlining tour

G Flip spends most of their time these days in the US, but the Aussie musician will soon make a triumphant return Down Under.

The Disco Cowgirl singer will kick off their Dream Ride Tour in Brisbane on February 27, before heading to Sydney’s Horden Pavilion, Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena, Adelaide’s Entertainment Centre and Perth’s Fremantle Arts Centre.

Melbourne’s shows will host the biggest crowds, totalling 15,000 people over two nights – a clear jump from G Flip’s debut headlining gig at Melbourne’s The Workers Club to just 250 people in 2018.

“This is my favourite place to play in the world for many reasons,” G Flip tells nine.com.au.

“This is where my roots of being a musician started and where all my family and friends are.

“It’s gonna be really awesome to get on the stages here and play these bigger venues.”

G Flip has not let the success get to their head, with the singer – who uses they/them pronouns – admitting they still get emotional thinking about how far they have come.

They recently visited their childhood home, which they credit as the birthplace of their music career.

“I drove back to my old family home, where I made all the songs which started my career … I had this moment of, ‘Wow, I’ve come pretty far.'”

”I still can’t believe it. I still pinch myself every day.”

While G Flip is Down Under to tour, they’ve taken on another project – supporting the AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a cover of Pat Benatar’s All Fired Up.

The cover will be released as an anthem for the tournament, which will be streamed on Paramount+ from March.

”They approached me to make my own take of an already-written song. They gave me a few options, but this one seemed to fit the bill lyrically and energetically,” they said.

The cover sticks close to the 1988 original with the added rock flair G Flip brings to every track.

“When you do a cover, it’s either you’re making it your own or you’re sticking to a brief,” they said.

”I’ve covered a lot of songs … some [are] just me saying, ‘What would I do if I played drums on this?’ or, ‘What would I do if I played guitar on this?'” they explained.

“It’s always thinking about my DNA as a musician and adding that to what the DNA is of the song that’s already written.”

The Worst Person Alive hitmaker says they were excited to get involved in the campaign as a self-declared women’s sports fanatic.

“This was combining my two loves, music and sport,” they said.

“I just believe in women’s sports and equality in sports in general.

“Whether it’s playing roles, coaching roles, refereeing roles, it’s the representation we need for our younger girls and non-binary folks growing up.

“Seeing that representation on a bigger scale, so they … have people to believe in and strive to be like.

“That helps them dream.”

G Flip’s most viral cover is their version of Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer, which caught the attention of the global pop star.

“She liked the cover, which was huge,” G Flip said.

“Then, she ran past my wife on a red carpet a few months ago, and she yelled out, ‘Say hi to your partner for me’ … so she knows who I am, which is crazy.”

G Flip said this year’s theme might be goth-inspired.
